After 13 years on the Costa del Sol, we have experienced a lot of people coming and going, the only negative I can really say about the coast is that it is transitional. This really shows itself with local trades, some come expecting a relaxed life whilst making a lot of money, and they don’t stay very long.
Life on the Costa as a builder is the same as pretty much anywhere, in order to make a living, it is hard work, long hours etc are not any different just because we live in the sun. There are not any freezing cold mornings scrapping ice off the van, but there are some scorching hot days, when work is difficult once the sun has its hat on! However, this is only for about 2 months of the year maximum, the rest of the year is an absolutely beautiful climate.
We are very lucky to say that we have now got a fantastic team of tradesmen who we work with closely, many of whom we have worked with for many years. But to build a team like that takes years, and a little bit of luck finding the people who are already usually in high demand.
So what should you look for when you are choosing your tradesmen?
Our first recommendation is look for someone who comes highly recommended, not by their friends but by someone who has had a decent amount of work done by them. Whilst Facebook can be a good source of contacts when you first arrive in Spain, people are often recommended by their friends rather than past clients.
Our second recommendation is, if possible, ask to see their work. Usually if a tradesmen has been on the coast for a while, there will be examples they can show you, or at the very least photos/videos etc.
Our third recommendation is, beware of anyone who can start tomorrow, with the exception of the emergency trades, electricians, plumbers etc. If they can start tomorrow they have not got any work, and if the economy is not in recession, then people who are good have always got work here. There will be exceptions to this rule of course, people do have jobs cancelled but bear it in mind when making your selection.
Finally, make sure you can communicate with them, I do not just mean language wise, do they pick up their phone when you need them? Are they knowledgable and familiar with the coast and its ways?
If you then find your tradesman, look after them and recommend them to everyone you meet. It will be hugely appreciated.
